While I am an ardent observer of Vastu principles, not all are and need not be. I will try to describe the principles in a simple manner and put it lightly, at places and deeply where required…

Important Vastu Tips

Vastu is not a quick fix solution. Do not expect 'magical'/ 'miraculous' or over arching results.

It is the right or vedic way to live and conduct business and commercial activities...

Essential

1. Kitchen should ideally be in the South East or fire corner.
2. Puja ghar in the north east corner.
3. Master bedroom in the south west part.
4. Daughter's bedroom in the north west.
5. Ensure the entrance door is larger than the other doors. 


Desirable

Start house construction with bhoomi pujan, water source poojan; tank in north east. Start actual construction in the south region with Agni puja. Construct compound wall thereafter.

Vastu principles are ancient but universal at once. It shall live till the end of all the yugas as it’s based upon very principles of creation.

I shall make every effort to write the basic principles in as easy-to-read and easy-to-follow manner, as I intend to simplify the fundamental ideas of Vastu Science. If I’m not clear or more clarification is sought, do mention. Do write as well on any other aspect, should you seek to know.

Vastu Shastra is derived from ‘Vas’ or to reside and ‘astu’ or this is how. Vastu has vedic origins. Stapatya veda is a part of the Atharva Veda. Reference is also made in the Brihat Samhita. While sage Mayam in his treatise Mayamatam, is said to have written extensively on Vastu Shastra and divine architect Vishwakarma developed it through his Vishrakarma Prakash; its ground work is well written in Puranas*; particularly the Skand, Vishnu, Agni, Garud and Matsaya.

Bhrigu, Brihaspati, Btahma, 
Gaarga, Kumara, Maya, 
Nagnajitha, Nandista, Narada, Purandara, 
Sunaka, Sukra, 
Vasishtha, Vishwakarma, Vaasudeva and Visalalaakshya. 

A serious beginner will almost certainly find it difficult to find where to start - the net being full of vastu tips et al. 

I would recommend all volumes of C Prasanna Kumar and Niranjan Babu's works to begin with.

Prominent instances of Vastu is evident in our popular past when Vishwakarma displays the model of golden city Dwarika to Lord Krishna, before the work started for the creation of Yadava King krishna’s fabled capital city (in modern coastal Gujarat). Mahabharata further notes the destruction of Pandava capital city of Indraprashtha to a Vastu dosh- water well in Brahma sthal or water where the land must be left vacant (water dominating where earth should). Indus Valley Civilization is understood to be built on Vastu principles. Modern reference is to Jaipur, built to Vastu specifications. Some analysts cite Chandigarh as a Vastu model too. The world famous Tirupati Balaji Temple stands in its grandeur unaffected by ages of elements- is a perfect Vastu illustration in India.

It must be noted here that entire principles were enunciated by Lord Shiva as Adi Guru  to the seven Brahm Rishis*. It was expounded as part of the mystery of creation of the Universe by the Divine.

Is Vastu Shastra religious or secular?

In simple words just like principles and benefits of Ayurveda extends to all, despite its exclusive Hindu origin, similarly Vastu benefits or dosh(!) is similar to all human beings. Vastu principles may have been expounded by ancient seers in India, but its origin, cause and impact relates distinctly and entirely to physics of creation and therefore applicable to all in all aspects of life.

For a lay man to understand and in tune with practice of the ancient ages; seers gave semi divine names to energies for correct understanding. The distinct names of Hindi Gods can be replaced with form of energies and all aspects of vastu remains unaffected.

It must however be stated that Vastu principles are originally derived from Hindi scriptures, and contain its imprint - loud and clear. 

It is clear that vastu is interplay of planets, stars, Sun and the five elements -  fire, air, water, earth and Space. The resultant magnetic, electrical and gravitational field provides the matrix for the inter and intra relations. There is no active role of God in this pure creation and therefore Vastu is not a religious ritual or practice.

Vastu Shastra highlights inter connectedness, inter relatedness and interdependence of five basic elements pervading throughout the Brahmand, Srishti or Universe.

-Five fundamental elements are fire, water, air, soil and Akash or ether.

-These are related to the Earth (tilted 23.4 degrees in its axis); stars in the universe; twelve planets and the Sun.

- Now the matter listed above cause and are affected by the following --

Gravitational pull of the Sun and planets and the distant stars

Gravitational pull of the Earth and Moon

Electrical field on the Earth with North-South field

Magnetic field on Earth

Wind direction caused due to rotation/tilt of the earth

Direction; varying intensity of the Sun rays on Earth and on us.

 These elements are impacted continuously by the planetary pulls, pushes, electrical, gravitational and magnetic fields; winds and Sun rays.

As these elements constitute a human being; the weight of the above truly impacts a person each second of his life, whether he knows it, accepts or rejects it or even cares about it.

Basic harmony of Water, Earth, Fire, Earth and Air with planet earth, its energies, The Sun and stars will yield inner peace and unhindered progress without our knowledge and disharmony of these elements with outer world will disrupt our lives’ subtly or distinctly and hinder our activities unceasingly until corrected. Mostly it goes undetected and therefore we continue to live with tensions and annoyance when a little effort could replace the friction with fulfillment.

  Who is Vastu Purusha

While mythological Vastu Purusha is a divine being lying down on a piece of land and assumes active form when constructed for dwelling/business; it is basically a guideline or manual for right construction, placement and activity within a walled compound, depending on the nature of activity performed.

How Vastu Shastra Works

Some illustrations -

1.       The Vastu Purusha when lying down has his head on the North East and Navel in centre.

Incidentally, the most healthy and desired sun rays come in the morning and is generally from North east direction. Thus though ancient sages suggested no heavy work, and no activity may be performed over the head of the Purusha, its significance lies in obtaining free flow of positive energy for the dwelling.

2.       As the wind direction is from west to east in India; the kitchen is suggested to be in the South East. That way, no affected air from the kitchen will flow back into the house but will flow away from the south east corner of the house directly outside.

3.       Trees, otherwise revered in India, absorb available positive energies and thus may attract the energy away from the house. Hence it is suggested not to grow tall trees in the East and North and never in the North East side of the house, however beneficial it actually is, otherwise.

At the heart of Vastu, resides universal well being of a dwelling unit, coated by mythology or religion. Vastu art is full of such illustrations for the benefit of the mankind.

1.       East - Direction of Knowledge or Aditya

2.       North  - Direction of Wealth or kubera

3.       West - Direction of Varuna

4.       South - Direction of Death or Yama

Fire – South east or Agneya Kone (Corner)

Air – North-West or Vayuvaya kone

Earth -- North East Ishan kone

Water -  West

Sky – Centre Brahma Sthala

 Is Vastu a science or Art

It is an art of living based on scientific premises.

Can Vastu alter ones's Destiny.

Nothing can. Vastu does not nullify fruits of destiny. It can mitigate to some effect, some aspects of destiny. Also the results of Vastu is subtle and not visible so instantly as some may suggest.

But faulty Vastu may hinder full benefits if destiny. That is important.In short, Vastu benefits will not alter your destiny, but full benefits of destiny will not be available to you, if you live in a vastu defect home.

Should one consult a Vastu expert if all is exceptionally well?

Does a hale and hearty person visit a doctor? Not likely, he may however want to do a check up. Precisely. No need to consult a Vastu, if all is rocking with you. But there are minor defects, if corrected your life could zoom like a meteor.

Basic do’s and don’t’s in Vastu Shastra

Most Important Five ‘Do’s’ in Vastu Shastra

1.       Keep your plot/building free of any heavy item on the North East. Keep the corner in spiritual or religious sentiment. The Lord (Shiva, as worshiped in India) resides there. All prayers, studies must be done facing east or north direction.  

2.       Earmark the centre of your house and keep it vacant. There must be no movement and least of our foot movement in the centre of your House, Hospital, School etc.

3.       All fire use must be in the South East Corner. The corner of fire element. Likewise North is the corner of the wealth or Kubera. All transactions in finance must be done in North direction.

4.       Tulsi or Basil plant and ‘money plant’ in house is a must according or this art.

Most Important Five ‘Don’ts’ in Vastu Shastra

1.       No toilet must be constructed or used, if already installed in the North east direction.

2.       No tall trees in the North; East or North-East direction.

3.       Do not sleep with your head in the North.

4.       South West direction is a serious direction; only the elders must sleep there. In office keep the heaviest of all structures in the South West to keep it calm.

5.       Do not hang pictures of violence wild animals etc in your office/home. 



In general

Central - Ideally to be left vacant. Drawing room, meeting place etc.
East - For studying, meditating, knowledge - direction of the Sun.
South - Bedroom, heavy stuff of the household South West. Kitchen towards South East.
West - Dining, sleeping


Pets ?-  North west.
Support staff  - North west
Balcony in south west - Do not use it.  Ideally, Close it.

Vastu Observations in DELHI/NCR

Mandir Near HUDA City Centre in Sushant Lok, Gurgaon                              4/10 rating

1.       Entry through West. Temple entry can be from any directions but Puranic suggestions limit to North and East entries.

2.       No open space in East and North. Open spaces in the form of greenery,  foliage; lawns etc must in North and east of a Mandir

3.       Vast space in west with lawns through which one enters the complex. Against Vastu guidelines

All the above Notings (1 to 3) can be attended through simple Vastu corrections. For instance; the lawns of the mandir, can be plotted separately (erection of a small wall) and a small entrance in the north (opening towards main road) may be made to attract footfalls.

Major Noting

1.       In the plot area, major heavy construction (towers) is in South; a major vastu strength.

2.       Water body, a fountain is in the east. Even when the fountain is not in use, the empty space in the east helps vastu energy to be harnessed optimally. Water body in the east is a Vastu 10 on 10.

3.       Entrance from all four sides – perfect Vastu requirement.

4.       Road on all four sides – a Vastu delight. Almost impossible to have a plit with roads and entrance on all four sides.

Noting

1.       Very heavy construction (Towers) in the North and East respectively.
